In-store clearance · The Home Depot

The website says $299. The register says $63.

Home Depot marks thousands of items down in store only, and the product page refuses to show you the price. We track the yellow tags, decode the endings, and tell you what's actually sitting on the shelf.

The last two digits

A clearance price tells you how long you have

Home Depot doesn't discount at random. Every marked-down item walks down a ladder, and the cents on the tag say which rung it's on. Learn four numbers and you can price an aisle at a glance.

Waiting for a price

Enter any shelf price and we'll read the ending for you.

Endings are a strong pattern, not a guarantee. Always price-check the item.

  1. .00
    Regular price

Nothing has happened to this item. It hasn't entered the markdown cycle, and no yellow tag exists for it yet.

  2. .06
First markdown · six weeks of runway

The item is officially on clearance and another cut is coming in roughly six weeks. Worth buying if you need it now, worth watching if you don't.

  3. .03
Final markdown · buy it now

Close to the floor. The store wants it gone within about three weeks and won't reorder. This is the rung where a $299 stapler becomes $63.

  4. .01
Penny item · already spoken for

A penny price means the item was flagged to be pulled from the floor and sent back or destroyed. Registers usually block the sale, so treat these as a curiosity, not a plan.

What a find looks like

Four markdowns, none of them visible online

Each of these sat on a product page at full price with nothing but a "see in-store clearance price" link. Clearance is set store by store, so treat every listing as a lead to price-check, not a promise.

Clearance is set per store and changes daily. A price on this page means one store had it, not that yours does.

Three steps, in order

How to turn a listing into a $63 stapler

01

Get the model or SKU

Pull the model number off the product page. That string is the only thing that survives the trip from the website to the store's system, and it's what you'll scan or type in.

02

Price-check it in the store

Scan the barcode with the Home Depot app, hit a price-check scanner on the endcap, or search the SKU on a Pro Desk terminal. The shelf tag is often stale — the register knows the real number.

03

Read the cents, then decide

A .06 means you can gamble on a deeper cut. A .03 means buy it today, because the store won't restock and the last unit walks out this week.
